14:03 pdurbin not to complain about a #firstworldproblem, but i guess i need one of these (or similar): Secure Your Retina MacBook With The MacLocks Lock Cable | TechCrunch - http://techcrunch.com/2012/07/02/secure-your-retina-macbook-with-the-maclocks-lock-cable/
14:50 dotplus agoddard: here is the exact error message "mount: cannot remount block device /dev/mapper/vg_root-lv_root read-write, is write-protected" when I try to remount from inside the guest
14:50 dotplus guess how I know now? :(
15:13 pdurbin dotplus: how?
15:21 dotplus pdurbin: because it failed again. for some reason, another VM lost its disk
15:29 pdurbin :(
16:30 raprasad pdurbin: take a long first day job break! The CS50 fair is actually today--not last week
18:58 miah moin
18:58 pdurbin moin
18:59 semiosis heya
19:21 pdurbin first mention of puppet in #dvn: http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dvn/2012-12-10#i_54 :)
20:53 pdurbin any opinions on this? How to install PostgreSQL on Mac OS X - @AstonJ's Blog - http://astonj.com/tech/how-to-install-postgresql-on-mac-os-x/
21:04 dotplus all these "curl foo | bash"-equivalent installation processes make me nervous
21:05 pdurbin yeah
21:05 dotplus apart from anything else, it promotes bad habits.
21:05 pdurbin i'm planning on going with http://www.enterprisedb.com/products/pgdownload.do#osx via http://www.postgresql.org/download/macosx/
21:05 pdurbin that'll give me 9.2, which has that json support i've been curious to try
21:07 dotplus when I get around to playing with 9.2, I'll almost certainly be doing it on a linux VM using PGDG's yum repo which will no doubt give me something _very_ recent (i.e. 9.2+)
21:08 pdurbin yeah, here's my idea for running postgres in a test vm for this app: https://github.com/pdurbin/dvn-vagrant
21:09 pdurbin but i'm going to go ahead and set up this macbook with postgres the way everybody else on the team does: http://guides.thedata.org/book/ii-application-environment-glassfish
21:20 pdurbin hmm, the guy who wrote that doc actually installed via fink... so many options :)
21:22 miah oh. fink. fun.
21:22 miah brew install postgresql
21:22 miah works quite well =)
21:22 pdurbin i feel like i use homebrew for a couple things... more than just wget...
21:22 pdurbin miah: right. brew :)
21:23 miah i remember fink though.. and i don't remember it fondly.
21:23 pdurbin miah: do you let homebrew write all over your system as root?
21:23 pdurbin i usually just keep it all in my home directory
21:23 pdurbin ironcamel: yes, this again :)
21:29 pdurbin oh, right. homebrew is the one that doesn't run as root (doesn't use sudo) but installs stuff be default in /usr/locl
21:29 pdurbin er, /usr/local , mean: https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/wiki/Installation
21:30 pdurbin which kind of rubs me the wrong way since there's stuff in /usr/local already
21:33 dotplus also macports
22:00 semiosis it's 5:00 somewhere...
22:08 miah it doesnt just use /usr/local
22:08 miah but /usr/local/Cellar primarily. it certainly does link things into /usr/local/bin though
22:09 miah im slowly working my way to workstation management via chef too though
22:09 miah so i don't really care. i install everything via homebrew or a dmg
22:10 semiosis i heard google uses puppet for workstation management on mac, probably goobuntu as well
22:11 miah google is a huge puppet shop
22:11 semiosis miah: do you know if that is a common practice?
22:11 crimsonfubot http://www.puppetville.com/
22:11 semiosis yeah
22:11 semiosis i mean, do you know if managing workstations with CM is common?
22:11 miah it is in many environments yes
22:11 miah less so in the startup world
22:11 semiosis hehe crimsonfubot does a @lucky any time you start a message with google
22:11 miah i think mostly because much of the work is left to be done
22:19 spilth I remember reading about some shop that uses Vagrant to build everything from their local development to production environment. This way it's guaranteed that prod is the same as dev.
22:20 pdurbin spilth: yes. i use this to go from dev to prod: https://github.com/dvn/iqirclog-vagrant
22:21 pdurbin whorka: on one of the VMs you guys set up for me, which hosts http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu
22:21 spilth We use Puppet at my job for servers, but not for local development boxes/environments
22:21 pdurbin miah: any plans to publish a howto on managing a mac with chef? i was thinking of using puppet to manage my macbook but i'll use whatever's easy :)
22:22 pdurbin semiosis: yeah, i noticed that the other day... had started a line with google... hmm
22:25 pdurbin spilth: that's not the best example though... not much dev goes into irc logging bot. here's me thinking out loud about how to get a java ee app into vagrant dev/stage/prod cycle: http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dvn/2012-12-10#i_55
22:25 spilth Don't think this was it but - Building and Distributing Development Virtual Machines With Vagrant - http://blog.meta-spaces.com/blog/2011/09/05/Vagrant/
22:25 spilth pdurbin: Do you consider dev to be a local developer's machine or a shared environment?
22:28 semiosis fwiw, in my group, dev is local workstation, test is shared HA in office w/out cm, staging is fully automated/puppetized prod-clone in aws, and prod is prod
22:30 spilth semiosis: interesting
22:32 spilth for us, developers set up their own local environment, dev/qa/prod are servers that are all puppetized. sometimes we have additional environments beyond. sometimes the names are consistent :-|
22:47 miah pdurbin: maybe?
23:57 pdurbin spilth: well, with vagrant it's kinda both... the dev environment is local but the config is shared with vagrant :)
